District Information

Located in the geographic center of Extremadura, the region of Sierra de Montánchez and Tamuja forms a triangle between the historic towns of Caceres, Trujillo and Merida.

The various folks who camped in these lands left their mark both on the monuments they treasure as their customs, landscape and cuisine.

The sing of Vetones Celtic hill forts of Iron Age remains of Roman villas and bridges as Benquerencia, castles like Montánchez, of Roman origin and Almohads, and even a little jewel of Spanish Visigothic architecture: the basilica Alcuéscar Santa Lucia, the only of its kind in the south of the Iberian Peninsula.

Not to forget their folk traditions and its varied cuisine, which occupy a place of honor Montánchez ham and figs. Two routes are recommended to know the region, both from the nearby city of Cáceres.

The first, beginning in Aldea del Cano, on the N-630 forms a loop by the peneplain and the foothills of the Sierra de Montánchez and ends in Arroyomolinos.

The second, taking the regional EX-206, begins in Sierra de Fuentes and among places where birds roost, draw a U to reach Santa Marta de Magasca.
